Global Groups Launch New Products and Technologies, Ushering in a New Transformation for the Rubber Industry
1. Industry Data
Influenced by China's August industrial output and other economic data, as well as investor position adjustments ahead of the National Day holiday, major rubber futures markets generally declined in the week ending September 19. The main contracts on the Osaka, Shanghai, and Singapore exchanges fell by 1.8%-2.5%, and trading volume shrank across the board, reflecting a shift in market sentiment towards caution after recent gains.
2. New Products and Technologies
Continental released its latest environmentally friendly urban bus tire, the Conti Urban HA 5 NXT. The product uses up to 60% renewable, recycled, and ISCC+ certified sustainable materials, achieving a 25% reduction in rolling resistance, a 15% increase in range, and a 15% improvement in wear resistance. Carbon emissions from production are reduced by 11%, and integrated sensors allow for rapid integration into digital management systems to optimize fleet operations.
French company Imerys Group launched Polwhite Loop, the world's first ISCC+ certified recycled kaolin product specifically designed for tire airtight layers. Compared to standard carbon black fillers, it reduces oxygen permeability by 35% while maintaining excellent processing fluidity. This innovative solution is expected to drive the development of sustainable materials in the tire industry.
On September 19, French company Hutchinson announced the development of a PFAS-free Lubritape-E coating, adding a new technology to the field of automotive multi-channel rotary valve seals. This dedicated transparent film for gaskets can replace traditional PTFE, is compatible with EPDM rubber, withstands extreme temperatures from -50°C to +115°C, exhibits low friction and wear resistance under harsh operating conditions, ensures leak-free thermal management modules, and meets environmental requirements. It is also compatible with automotive electrification and can be integrated into automated production, contributing to the industry's green transformation.
3. Investment and Production
Sumitomo Rubber announced plans to establish a new technology center in Gatesville, New York, focusing on the research, testing, and innovation of passenger car, motorcycle, and light truck tires for the Americas market. This move marks a shift in the company's business focus in the United States from manufacturing to research and development and technological innovation.
Freudenberg Sealing Technologies has agreed to acquire the Austrian sealing systems specialist DMH Group. Headquartered in Traboch, DMH specializes in thermoplastic elastomers and custom metal sealing solutions, with three plants in Austria and the United States, generating tens of millions of euros in annual sales.
Enviro, a leading tire pyrolysis company, has completed the installation of five pyrolysis units at its waste tire pyrolysis plant in Sweden. The company stated that the main units are all in place and can recover carbon black, pyrolysis oil, and steel from waste tires, with an annual processing capacity of 34,500 tons. The plant, a joint venture between Enviro and Michelin, is expected to begin production by the end of 2025 and be completed and accepted by mid-2026.
Italian composite material manufacturer Taro Plast recently added an extrusion production line at its Ferrara plant, focusing on expanding its thermoplastic copolyester elastomer capacity to meet the strong demand for high-viscosity extruded/blow-molded materials from the automotive and industrial sectors. The company disclosed on September 22 that this investment will simultaneously increase the production capacity of its two major elastomer products, Pibiflex and Riteflex, strengthening its R&D efficiency and precision advantages. Full operation is expected by the end of September.
