Natural rubber (NR) comes from rubber tree latex. Its molecular chains are more mobile, giving it excellent elasticity, but the looser structure allows air to escape more easily over time.

Some riders and drivers prefer the "softer" feel of natural rubber, but that's mostly a tactile difference — when it comes to puncture resistance and fatigue resistance under real-world load, butyl still performs more consistently.

Dimensional Stability — Natural Rubber Is More Forgiving, Butyl Requires Tighter Process Control

To be fair, butyl isn't without its trade-offs. It has weaker shrink-back properties than natural rubber, so poor formulation or curing control can lead to tube "ballooning" (permanent size expansion that doesn't shrink back).
